With the FIFA World Cup starting today, it has been undoubtedly the biggest sporting event on earth to happen every four years. The first football world cup was played in the year of 1930, and the recent 2018 edition will be played in the beautiful country of Russia.
Throughout these years the FIFA World Cup has been full of controversies and big fights. Here we unravel some of the biggest ever controversies took place in the history of FIFA World Cup –
1. The Zidane's Headbutt
In the infamous 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy, the French captain gave away the match with a headbutt to Marco Materazzi, who allegedly insulted Zidane's sister. Zidane was sent off, and without him in penalty shootout, Italy won the World Cup.
2. The Maradona 'Hand of God' Goal
Diego Maradona while foreshadowing dribble put his hand while putting in a goal in the 1986 FIFA World Cup final. Maradona had his fist touching the ball it into the nets. Later Maradona described the incident as "a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God".
3. The Fixed 1998 Final
The Brazil star striker Ronaldo suffered a seizure on the 1998 World Cup final day. France won the 1998 FIFA final by 3-0. As per the the conspiracy Brazil was bribed in the final match to give away the final, and also that its star player Ronaldo had been drugged.
4. The Goal Which Did Not Cross The Line
The second goal of Hurst in the 4-2 extra-time win over the West Germany actually hit the underside of the bar and then bounced down on the line and away. Back then, there was no goal-line technology, that goal post goal still remains one of the most debated goals ever in history of FIFA World Cups.
5. Own Goal Killing Player
Colombia lost just one match in 26 matches prior to the 1994 FIFA World Cup and had beaten Argentina 5-0 to qualify for the playoffs. But they lost to Romania 3-1 in the opening match due a own goal by Escobar. He was later shot and killed in an argument at a bar after he returned home.
6. The Battle of Titans
Brazil and Hungary met each other in a fierce battle in 1954 and with heavy rain Hungary won the match 3-1. The match saw Brazilian journalists storm onto the field and denigrated where three players were sent off.
7. The Bracelet Of Bobby Moore
The English skipper during the 1970 World Cup was booked and arrested in Colombia allegedly for stealing a bracelet made out of diamond and emerald while the team. The prime minister from England had to lobby it with the Colombian government to shut down the case. It was said to be an attempt to keep away the 1966 World Cup-winning captain.
8. The South Korea Success During 2002 World Cup
South Korea being a joint hosts during the 2002 FIFA World Cup, during the round of 16 match the referee was charged with letting South Korean players escape several fouls. Throughout the tournament South Korea was lobbied to advance in the tournament, and finally the team got out in the semifinals following a penalty shootout.
