The FOPO Epidemic: How to Stop Worrying About What People Think Online
In a world of likes and comments, we’ve all started acting like we’re on a stage 24/7. This has led to a major problem called FOPO, or the Fear of Other People’s Opinions.
Basically, FOPO is that nervous feeling you get before posting something, or the stress you feel when a photo doesn’t get enough likes. It’s an old survival instinct that has gone haywire because of the internet. We used to care what our neighbors thought; now, we worry about what the whole world thinks.

Why the Internet Makes FOPO Worse
Social media turns our lives into a performance. We often feel like:
- Life is a contest: We compare our “behind-the-scenes” struggles to everyone else’s “greatest hits.”
- Numbers equal worth: We start believing that 10 likes means we are “lesser” than someone with 1,000 likes.
- The “Ghost” Jury: We imagine thousands of people judging us, even though most people are actually just scrolling past.

How to Break Free
You don’t have to stop caring about everyone, but you do need to stop caring about everyone at once.
- Pick Your People: Only care about the opinions of people who actually know you and love you. If you wouldn’t go to someone for advice, don’t let their negative comment ruin your day.
- Focus on Your “Why”: Post things because they make you happy or represent who you really are, not just to get a reaction. When you are proud of what you did, the “likes” are just a bonus.
- The “3-Second Rule”: Remember that most people look at your post for about three seconds before moving on to think about themselves. You aren’t the main character in their story—they are.
- Be “Imperfection-Brave”: Try posting something that isn’t perfect. Share a messy desk, a blurry photo, or a simple thought. You’ll quickly see that the world doesn’t end when you aren’t “perfect.”
When you spend all your time trying to look good to others, you lose the energy to actually be yourself. The best way to beat FOPO is to remember that you are the only person who has to live with you every single day. Make sure you are the one you’re trying to impress.
